Oral History Traveling Exhibits

"We escaped with nothing, not event pictures...I walked for 15 days....When I got to Kenya, the rest of the family had already left....I was scared of being killed and never seeing my kids again. I never dreamed I'd be with them in the U.S." - Amina, from Somalia

"I really missed my mom. I didn't know if she was alive." - Mulki, age 15, Amina's daughter

"My mom came to Chicago on November 22, 1996....It was a big surprise. She hugged and kissed me. She cried and I cried. We had a party, the biggest party in the world." - Mohammed, age 8, Amina's son

The oral history traveling exhibits present inter-generational stories derived from our original, permanent exhibit at Hibbard School in Albany Park, one of Chicago's most diverse communities. They represent families from Bosnia, Cambodia, Iraq, Mexico, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Palestine, Poland, Puerto Rico, and Somalia.

Oral History Traveling Exhibit, Version I:

*For rental nation-wide
Recommended for ages 9 to adult

This exhibit features stories of 11 families, along with photographs and maps printed on six colorful vinyl panels. The six, free-standing, two-sided panels include an introduction to the exhibit and eleven family stories. Interactive activities are provided to help viewers explore and share their own backgrounds and identities as they learn about the families in the exhibit.

Space Requirements:

Each of the six free-standing panels is 2.5' wide by 7' tall. Since they are double-sided, they should be placed where both sides can be viewed.

Oral History Traveling Exhibit, Version II:

*For rental in the Chicago area only
Recommended for ages 12 to adult

This exhibit presents photographs and stories of 10 families on two free-standing wooden structures. Black and white photographs are mounted under Plexiglas next to each family's story. The center section of each structure holds original student artwork.

Space Requirements:

An area of 13' by 13' is required for each exhibit structure, but if placed together the exhibits can fit into an area of 13' by 22'.

These three-dimensional, 6' tall structures should be placed where all sides can be viewed.

Changing Worlds' Book of Family Stories & Activity Guide

Serving as companions to Changing Worlds' Oral History Traveling Exhibits, the book and activity guide are great tools to use when exploring different cultures and challenging stereotypes. Changing Worlds' book features photographs and oral histories from 11 families who share their stories of change, loss and cultural traditions. The activity guide incorporates these stories into language arts and social studies curricula, including lessons on cultures and immigration, and provides opportunities for students to explore their own families' histories.
